After several years of searching, our Client did find a waterfront lot on a high bluff with expansive river views for a second family home. Their goal was a contemporary residence for casual family living where the stress of busy lives could be put on the back burner with peaceful serenity providing the restorative medicine for the return to the city.
An open, ground floor plan was the solution to bring the beauty of the natural environment into the home. The family living areas with 180+ degree panoramic views of the water provided these uninterrupted visual access for the living room, dining room and open kitchen. These views of the river wrapped the corners with a guest suite at one end and a home office, can one ever get completely away from work, on the opposite end. Support functions (laundry, utility, half bath and closets) were relegated to the road side. Visual excitement was part of the roadside with a high bay open stair overlooking the sites auspicious pines.
The upper level housed the three bedrooms: a master suite with private bath and two bedrooms with a shared bath. All three bedrooms enjoyed the water views. The bathrooms also accessed borrowed light and views of the high bay entrance stair. Windows in the master bedroom featured the zero edge water view when lying in bed.
The residence exterior had Nichiha wall cladding and standing seam metal roofing. Parapet walls were used to maintain the simplicity of the contemporary planes while concealing more complicated roofing pitches. A wrap around porch opened to the common living areas and guest suite. The upper level, southwest corner bedroom featured a private balcony.
